1. Promenade des Anglais

The Promenade des Anglais is not only one of the top attractions in Nice, but one of the top landmarks in France.   This seafront boulevard stretches along the beaches of Nice, offering you breathtaking views of the sparkling Mediterranean.

This famous walkway is the best place in Nice to enjoy a relaxing stroll or an invigorating bike ride.  Wear comfortable shoes and don’t forget your sunscreen.

Don’t miss the iconic blue chairs, perfect for sitting and enjoying the seascape.  The Mediterranean views are unbeatable, especially at sunset! (That’s what makes Nice such a romantic French destination!)

Keep your eyes open to spot luxury hotels like the famous Hotel Negresco, a landmark itself (and a great place to sip a classy cocktail).

For history buffs, the Promenade des Anglais has a rich past dating back to the 19th century. It was named after the English aristocrats who funded its construction, and part of what makes Nice a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s the ideal spot for people-watching and photos. Take time to admire the fountains, sculptures, gardens, and open spaces.  Don’t miss the gorgeous Fontaine du Soleil, one of the most famous landmarks in Nice.

During major festivals and public events, Place Massena becomes the center of attention. Concerts, parades, and markets often take place here, making it a key cultural spot in Nice.

Visit the Cours Saleya Market for fresh produce, flowers, and local delicacies. Treat yourself to some tasty socca (a chickpea pancake) or pissaladière (a type of flatbread with onions, olives, and anchovies).

You’ll also want to visit the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, a stunning example of Baroque architecture.

Relax at a sidewalk café with a cool drink and soak up the atmosphere. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time in this picturesque part of Nice.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you explore Vieux Nice as the cobbled streets can be tricky.  And keep your camera handy!

5. Marché Aux Fleurs – Cours Saleya

When you visit Nice, you should definitely explore the Marché Aux Fleurs on Cours Saleya.

This amazing flower market operates every day except Mondays. Colorful flowers, fresh produce, and local delicacies await you. Wander through stalls — it’s a feast for your senses!

I love visiting local markets – it’s a great way to save money and stay on budget when traveling. 

Pick up a baguette, some cheese, and some fresh fruit, and you’ve got everything you need for a picnic! (Might I recommend enjoying your picnic on the Promenade des Anglais?)

You’ll also discover a mix of souvenirs and handmade crafts. These make perfect gifts or mementos of your trip to France.

On Mondays, the market transforms into an antique market. Here, you can hunt for unique treasures and vintage finds.

Remember to bring your camera. The beauty of the market and its surroundings offer plenty of photo opportunities.

On Castle Hill, there are lush gardens, historic ruins of an ancient castle, and a beautiful waterfall. It’s a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets below.

Castle Hill is also a great spot for birdwatching and photography, especially at sunset.

Pro Tips: Look for the signposts and informational plaques; they provide interesting historical insights about the hill and its former castle.  Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

The Carnaval in Nice is an event like no other. Held every February, this amazing festival lasts for two weeks.  It’s one of the largest Carnival celebrations in the world!

You’ll love the fabulous parades. The Flower Parade is exceptionally beautiful, where floats decorated with millions of flowers make their way through the streets.

There’s music everywhere. Live bands and DJs fill the air with an electric and joyful atmosphere.

Highlights:

• Flower Parade: Extravagant floral floats.
• Illuminated Parade: Lights, music, and dance.
• Battle of Flowers: Throwing blossoms from the floats.

Enjoy street performances and various cultural shows. There’s something happening around every corner, so keep your eyes peeled.

9. Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas

The unique architecture of Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas makes it a must-visit in Nice.

Located in the heart of the city, this stunning structure stands as one of the finest examples of Russian Orthodox architecture outside of Russia.

Built in 1912, the cathedral was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II to serve Russian communities on the French Riviera. It has a rich history tied to Russian aristocracy.

You’ll be amazed by its colorful onion domes and intricate frescoes. The exterior boasts an array of colors and patterns, while the interior is filled with beautiful icons and ornate details.

The cathedral is open to visitors daily. Make sure to check the dress code before your visit, as proper attire is required. Entrance is free, but donations are appreciated.

Take your time to walk around and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The garden surrounding the cathedral is also a lovely spot to relax.

10. Musée Matisse

When you visit Nice, don’t miss the chance to visit the Musée Matisse, one of the best museums in France. This gem is dedicated to Henri Matisse and showcases his artwork spanning from his early years to his later period.

Located in the Cimiez area, the museum is housed in a beautiful 17th-century villa, providing a serene setting for appreciating art.

Browse the permanent collection which includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and even personal items of Matisse.  Collection highlights include “The Blue Nude” and unique cut-outs and collages.

Keep an eye out for temporary exhibitions that delve deeper into various aspects of Matisse’s life and work.

After your visit, take a stroll through the gardens around the museum.  They are located on the site of a Roman amphitheater.

Tip:  Your ticket to the Matisse Museum also allows you to visit the adjacent archaeological museum.

11. Roman Ruins and History

When you visit Nice, you’ll discover its rich history stretching back to Roman times. The city was once known as Cemenelum, a significant part of the Roman Empire.

• Cimiez Arena: You can explore the ancient Roman amphitheater in the Cimiez neighborhood. These ruins give you a glimpse into the city’s past entertainment culture.

• Roman Baths: Don’t miss the well-preserved Roman baths. Imagine citizens of the past relaxing and socializing in these impressive structures.

• Museums: The Cimiez area is also home to the Archaeological Museum. Here, you’ll find artifacts and exhibits that bring the Roman era to life for you.

Walk around the Roman ruins, feel the stones under your feet, and let history envelop you. Enjoy the unique mix of ancient and modern as you wander through these historical sites.

12. Nice Jazz Festival

The Nice Jazz Festival is a must-see event for music lovers. Held annually in July, it attracts some of the world’s top jazz artists.

Located in the heart of Nice, the festival takes place at the scenic Albert 1er Gardens and the Théâtre de Verdure. The picturesque surroundings add to the unique atmosphere.

The festival features performances by legendary jazz musicians as well as emerging talent. Past performers include Herbie Hancock, Jamiroquai, and Chick Corea.

The festival usually lasts for a week, with multiple performances each day. Be sure to check the official website for the latest schedule and line-up.

Tickets are available online and at the venue. It’s recommended to book early as they can sell out quickly.

13. Marc Chagall National Museum

The Marc Chagall National Museum is a must-visit when you’re in Nice. Dedicated to Marc Chagall, one of the 20th century’s most famous painters, this museum showcases an extensive collection of his works.

Wander through 17 rooms filled with vibrant paintings, many quite large in scale. Each room focuses on different themes from his artistic career. Chagall’s Biblical Message paintings are a museum highlight.

The museum also has a beautiful Mediterranean garden, perfect for a quiet moment of reflection.

Don’t miss the auditorium, which frequently hosts concerts and cultural events.  The stunning blue stained-glass windows were actually my favorite part of my museum visit! 

(Marc Chagall became quite well-known for his work with stained glass.  He designed many famous stained-glass windows including the Cathedral of Metz in France and the UN building in New York!)

Pro tip: The museum is less crowded in the morning. Arriving early will give you a more intimate experience with Chagall’s masterpieces. Plus, it’s easier to get great photos without large crowds.

14. Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (MAMAC)

If you love modern art, be sure to check out the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (MAMAC) during your trip to Nice.

MAMAC showcases stunning collections from the 1960s to the present day.  You’ll find a fantastic mix of pop art, minimalism, and New Realism.

The museum’s architecture itself is a masterpiece.  The unique design integrates glass, metal, and concrete, providing an interesting contrast with nearby Vieux Nice.

Inside, browse works by renowned artists like Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Andy Warhol.

Each exhibit offers a unique perspective on contemporary art movements.  Interactive displays and installations make the museum experience engaging and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

Tip: The roof terrace provides panoramic views of Nice. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

15. French Riviera Day Trips

Nice makes a perfect home base for exploring the stunning French Riviera. Here are some ideas for fun and easy day trips from Nice:

• Monaco offers a taste of luxury with its glamorous casinos and yacht-filled harbor.  A day trip from Nice to Monaco takes less than an hour by train or bus.

• Menton, the “Pearl of France,” is famous for its citrus groves and pastel-colored buildings.  It’s a beautiful train ride along the coast.

• Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat offers stunning coastal walks and the exquisite Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. It’s perfect for a relaxing day by the sea.

• Explore Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. Tour fragrance factories and create your own scent (it’s the perfect souvenir of your trip to France!).

• Eze is a hilltop town with spectacular views.  The medieval village and botanical gardens are a must-see. It’s accessible by a scenic bus ride.

• Antibes captivates visitors with its historic old town and beautiful beaches.  Visiting the famous Picasso Museum in the Chateau Grimaldi is one of the best things to do in Antibes.

• For a glimpse of the good life, take a trip to Saint-Tropez.  Experience its lively markets, vibrant nightlife, and chic boutiques. It’s one of the prettiest towns in the South of France!

• Villefranche-sur-Mer is known for its deep harbor and charming streets. It’s just a short train ride from Nice, making it an easy day trip.

• Consider visiting the Alps for a day of hiking and breathtaking views.  The mountains provide a beautiful contrast to the coastal scenery.
