Rome is one of those cities where you can eat incredibly well without trying very hard. But if you really want to understand Roman food—and find some of the places and dishes you might otherwise miss—a food tour is one of my favorite ways to experience the city.
I’ve been to Rome several times, and food is always part of the experience for me. Give me a plate of Cacio e Pepe, a neighborhood market, or a good gelato stop, and I’m a happy traveler. I’ve also learned that a food tour can be a great way to get beyond the obvious tourist restaurants and learn a little more about the food traditions that make Rome so special.
I’ve rounded up some of the best Rome food tours below, including options in different neighborhoods and tours focused on everything from traditional Roman dishes to street food, markets, pasta, and wine. Whether you’re visiting Rome for the first time or returning for another taste of the Eternal City, there’s a tour here that can make your trip even more delicious.

Rome Food Tour Tips and FAQ
The 4 classic pasta dishes in Rome are Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara, Gricia, and Amatriciana. Carbonara used to be my favorite, but lately I’ve really started to prefer Cacio e Pepe. Try them all to see which one you like best!
If I’m in Rome for only 48 hours, I would consider it a sin against God to not eat Cacio e Pepe, the most uniquely Roman pasta, in some crummy little joint where Romans eat.
I’d much rather do that than go to the Vatican. That’s Rome to me.
Anthony Bourdain
Yes, it is definitely worth doing a food tour in Rome! It’s more than just the delicious food and drink that you will enjoy on your tour. You’ll also get the experience and knowledge of a local guide and visit local favorite restaurants that you’d never find on your own!
The best time to take a food tour in Rome is on the first day of your trip, so that you can learn tips on all of the best local places to eat!
Just like with any guided tour, if you enjoyed your food tour you should definitely tip your tour guide! A good guideline is to tip 10% of your tour cost.
The legal drinking age in Italy is 18 years old.
DOCG is the highest classification of wine in Italy. D.O.C.G. stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. Many food tours of Rome include tastings of DOCG wine.
Supplì are fried rice balls with mozzarella (and sometimes tomato sauce) at the center. Supplì are a traditional and beloved Roman street food, delicious and easy to eat on the go.
No, tips are not included in the cost of a food tour in Rome. If you enjoyed your tour, it’s always appreciated to tip your Rome travel guide. Always carry some Italian currency for tipping!
Final Thoughts..
A food tour is one of those experiences I’d happily recommend for almost any first-time visitor to Rome. Yes, you’ll eat well—but you’ll also learn more about the city, its neighborhoods, and the traditions behind the food you’re tasting.
If this is your first trip to Rome, I’d especially consider booking a food tour early in your visit. It’s a fun way to get oriented, discover a few foods you want to try again, and perhaps find a neighborhood you’ll want to explore more on your own.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably leave Rome with a much longer list of things you still want to eat!
If you’re planning your Rome itinerary, you might also want to explore my guide to the most beautiful and famous piazzas in Rome—many of them are easy to combine with a food tour. Or, if you’d rather cover more ground without walking all day, check out my guide to the best Rome golf cart tours.
Rome is a city I never seem to get tired of visiting. There’s always another neighborhood to wander, another piazza to discover, and, of course, another plate of pasta to try.
Planning a trip to Rome and getting hungry just thinking about all of this delicious food? Pin this for later!
