Parliament Hill and the iconic Parliament Buildings are the top attractions in Ottawa

The Parliament Buildings in Ottawa are among the most iconic and historic sites in Canada.

They’re also one of the most stunning attractions in Ottawa and will have you stopping in your tracks and reaching for your camera. (At least, that’s what I did when I first saw them as I was walking from the bus stop to my hotel!)

Located on Parliament Hill, these grand Gothic Revival-style buildings were built to house the Canadian federal government. The Centre Block backs to the Ottawa River, with the East Block and West Block buildings set perpendicular to the Center Block like wings embracing the grassy lawn area.

The central building, or Centre Block, is the most eye-catching with the magnificent Peace Tower rising over 300 feet into the air and proudly flying the Canadian flag.

This is normally where the Parliament would meet, however the Center Block is currently being renovated. The House of Commons has moved into the West Block, and the Senate has relocated a block away in a lovely Beaux-Arts style building.

Taking a tour of the Parliament Buildings is the best thing to do in Ottawa. It offers an incredible opportunity to learn about Canada’s history and admire its majestic architecture. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the rooms of Parliament where the Canadian government conducts its business.

While you’re visiting the ByWard Market neighborhood, walk west down York Street in the direction of the Rideau Canal and the Parliament Buildings.

You can’t miss the dramatic OTTAWA sign, with its 8-foot-tall block letters glowing with different colors. The colors can be changed for special events and are more dramatic and vibrant at night once the sun has set.

If you’re visiting during the day, take a look a bit further down the street to see the York Step, one of the many staircases in Ottawa which are beautifully decorated with murals. (Take a close look at my picture and you can just see the staircase mural in the distance, beyond the OTTAWA sign.)
